It’d derived from an African? tree, from the leaves if I reacll correctly. That’s not to say it can’t be synthesized cheaply. I don’t know. There’s probably a good deal of detail at www.rxlist.com. It has two beneficial effects, for which it is used in the treatment of pulmonary congestion. It is said to thin mucus secretions, and it relaxes smooth muscles. Both of these would have the net effect of expanding the airway. Probably by coincidence, it changes some of the parameters which occur in the kidney, and the excretion of certain metabolic byproducts are said by some to change for the better. It is also supposed to free up magnesium in the body, making it more available. Low magnesium is frequently correlated with major depression, irritable bowel, and chronic fatigue.
