when to increase Zoloft dose?

Question:

Hi, I’ve been on Zoloft for about 4 wks now.  Despite a few good days, I don’t feel much better (still have anxiety & depression).  Right now I’m on 50 mg, and I was wondering if increasing the dose would help.  I won’t see the doctor for another month, but I could call him if it would help.  I saw him last week, and he seemed to think I was doing better and did not increase the dose.  I don’t, however, feel much better, and I’m still tired, oversleeping, unable to concentrate, etc.  When is it time to try an increase?  Should I call him?  I’m very new to this… Thanks!

Zoloft takes up to 6 weeks to have full effect. 50mg is a pretty titchy dose; typically you should aim for 100 – 150mg if you’re not getting an adequate effect (doses of up to 200mg are possible, but there’re some recommendations that this shouldn’t be maintained for more than two months)  Generally speaking, you should be able to increase the dose in 50mg increments every fortnight, but keep a look out for unwanted effects and if they’re troublesome you might want to cut the increments down a bit, to say 25mg. Hi Rabbit In Nov. my physician prescribed zoloft.  The first week I took one 50mg capsule with supper, the second week I took 2 mg capsules and the third week I took 3 capsules.  Zoloft took approximately 8 weeks to work for me. I feel great now although I do have trouble sleeping.  I’m not going to complaint about the sleeping, however, because I get up in the morning and have more energy than I have had for the last five years. P.S.  When I first went on medication, I reported to my doctor every two weeks.

Strangely enough there seems to be a sort of retarded effect in the personal feeling of improvement. At first the people nearby seem to notice a possitive effect, for yourself it then still can take a week or two to become aware of the improvement. If your doctor thinks there is a positive effect, maybe it is a good idea to give it another week or two. If still no improvement, call him about an increase. I am just passing through here. I have been taking 200mg of Zoloft for something like 4 or 5 years now. Anyone know the long term effects? To me it seemed like I stopped getting a really positive effect after the second year. That is the effect sort of leveled off and declined somewhat. Where Zoloft used to make me just a little hyper right after taking it, now it makes me sleepy. Normal? Please feel free to e-mail me directly.

Yep, it ended up making me sleepy. I used to cycle back and forth between a lower and higher dose to try to combat that. I eventually switched to Prozac, which works better for me. — Stef              **  rational/scientific/philosophical/mystical/magical/kitty  ** "One of us has to be a pragmatist." "Nonsense!"
